Cultivation
- Coconut soil
- Peat-free potting soil
- Hemp mats
Nutritional values per 100g
Steps of cultivation
- Prepare growth medium and generously moisten the surface
- Distribute seeds evenly and avoid partial accumulations, moisten
- Cover and weigh down with any cover (e.g. a paving stone)
- Very long germination, it occurs in 3 - 4 days
- Remove cover and transfer to aquaponics system
- After 10 to 12 days, the ripe microgreens can be harvested
- The best time is when the microgreens are approx. 7 cm tall and the real leaves are small
- Leek microgreens hold their seed coat tightly, which is usually located on the tip of the stalk. They are edible but can be removed with a gentle brush before harvesting if desired
- Harvesting should take place in the morning or evening due to cooler temperatures
Leek microgreens require specific cultivation techniques due to their slow germination and tendency to retain seed coats. Unlike faster-growing alliums, leek seeds take 3-4 days to germinate at optimal soil temperature of 24°C (75°F), which should be reduced to 16°C (60°F) after emergence. Total time from sowing to harvest ranges from 10-12 days, with plants reaching approximately 7.5 cm height when ready for harvest . Leek microgreens are classified as heavy feeders with high nitrogen requirements and prefer a pH range of 6.2-7.0. The seeds hold their seed coats tightly, which remain attached to the tips of the stalks after germination. These seed coats are edible but can be removed with a gentle brush before harvesting if desired for aesthetic purposes Bottom watering is essential to prevent soil splash that can trap seed coats. Harvest during cooler morning or evening temperatures to maintain post-harvest quality, cutting when true leaves begin to emerge. Leek microgreens develop a sweet onion flavor distinctly different from mature leeks .
